As I am starting my Masters in Educational Technology at MSU, I wrote this essay to reflect upon my understanding on learning, its methods, and how does it apply in my work. I was very excited to learn that many of the educational methods suggested in How People Learn are already practiced in the project I am currently working on. The book is brilliant and I highly recommend it for educators, curriculum designers and decision makers, it is in fact one of the most influential books in education. In this essay I answer to my assignment in CEP810, and talk about how the teaching methods and practices of the book apply to a newly-developed computer science curriculum that I am working on.
Happy reading!
Hi Hanan,
I really enjoyed reading your essay this week. I couldn’t agree more that creating lifelong learners is a goal in the classroom…I actually wrote a lot about that in my essay this week! As a special education Language Arts teacher, I want to improve my students’ abilities in reading and writing, but I also want to create independent thinkers, motivated learners, and technology literate students! I was really interested in reading about your computer science curriculum, at my school we are focused on project based learning assignments in all core classes. This is much like your science curriculum that allows students to be taught concepts as opposed to being taught every single thing they need to put into their projects. I like that we are allowing our students to become critical thinkers and really have options within the classroom. I think it allows students to enjoy school and be an active participant in their education!
Thanks for letting me read your work!
Leanne
Thank you Leanne, I read your essay and really enjoyed it too!
Students do need to have the encouragement and opportunity to develop their “learning” skills, and I am happy that this is the approach of your school. For me it is still a challenge in my country as the school system has been fluctuating in the last few years, but let’s hope we can make a difference even if small!
